Confusing terminology

It is easy to confuse Information Technology (IT) terms, even IT professionals do it.

The terms Internet and WEB are often used interchangeably, even though they are not the same. The Internet is the infrastrucure; that is computers and communication links which form the Network. The WEB is merely an application which operates on the Internet. There are other Internet based applications such as E-Mail, File Transfer, Short Message Service (SMS) and the various Social Media platforms.

A similar pitfall afflicts the mainframe, when people use the term to refer to a particular operating system, when in reality mainframe is the physical boxes on the floor, the stuff you can stub your toe against.
