The illustration opposite shows the process, which is essentially the same in COBOL and PLI, but which is hidden from the programmer.

The effect is achieved in COBOL by the combination of 01 items in the LINKAGE SECTION, and the USING clause on the PROCEDURE DIVISION statement.
